Veterans Day or Memorial Day?
Veterans Day (11 November) honours everyone who has served in the US armed forces, living or not. Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) remembers those who died in service. For Veterans Day, a simple thank you to a living veteran is always welcome.
The date comes from the armistice that ended the fighting of World War I on 11 November 1918. The US holiday was called Armistice Day until 1954, when it was renamed Veterans Day.
Tips for a Veterans Day message
- Keep it simple and sincere: a specific thank you means more than big words.
- If you know where or when they served, mention it.
- Don't ask about combat experiences in a message; let them share what they want.
